Short bio.
Ryohei Nakatsu received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electronic engineering from Kyoto University in 1969, 1971, and 1982 respectively. After joining NTT in 1971, he mainly worked on speech recognition technology. In 1994, he joined ATR (Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute) as Director of ATR Media Integration & Communications Research Laboratories. In 2002 he became Professor at the School of Science and Technology, Kwansei Gakuin University. From March 2008 until December 2014 he was Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and was Director of Interactive & Digital Media Institute (IDMI) at NUS. Now he is serving as Adjunct Professor at Design School, Kyoto University. Also, he is serving as CEO of NT & Associates. His research interests include interactive media, entertainment technologies, and communication robot/agent.
In 1978, he received Young Engineer Award from the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers Japan (IEICE-J), in 1996 the best paper award from the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia, in 1999, 2000, and 2001, the Telecom System Award from Telecommunication System Foundation and the best paper award from Virtual Reality Society of Japan, and in 2000 the best paper award from Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence. Also, he received in 2010 the IEEE Kansai Section medal, in the 2011 IEEE Virtual Reality Service Award, and in the 2012 IFIP TC14 Contribution Award.
He is a fellow of the IEEE since 2001 and a life fellow since 2014. Also, he is a fellow of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers Japan (IEICE-J) since 2001, and the Virtual Reality Society of Japan since 2012. Also, he is an honorary member of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence. He is a member of various academic societies such as IEEE, IEICE-J, Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence., and others. He was a chair of the IFIP Technical Committee on Entertainment Computing from 2006 until 2012.
略歴
1946年生まれ。1969年京都大学工学部卒。1971年京都大学大学院修士課程修了。日本電信電話公社（現NTT）武蔵野電気通信研究所入所。1980年横須賀電気通信研究所。音声認識の基礎研究、応用研究に従事。1990年NTT基礎研究所研究企画部長。1991年NTT基礎研究所情報科学研究部長。1994年ATRに出向し、ATR知能映像通信研究所代表取締役社長として、工学とアートを融合した研究を推進。2002年より関西学院大学情報科学科教授。また、2001年に（株）ニルバーナテクノロジーを設立し代表取締役社長。2008年から2014までシンガポール国立大学教授およびInteractive & Digital Media Institute所長。現在京都大学デザインスクール特命教授、ヘキサゴンジャパン代表取締役社長、NTアソシエイツ取締役。1982年工学博士（京都大学）。
1978年度電子情報通信学会学術奨励賞。IEEE Multimedia Systems and Computing’96最優秀論文賞。1997年第１回ロレアル大賞、1999年映像情報メディア学会論文賞、1999・2000年テレコムシステム技術賞、1999・2000・2001年日本バーチャルリアリティ学会論文賞、2000年人工知能学会論文賞、2001年文部科学大臣賞、2010年IEEE関西支部メダル、2011年IEEE Virtual Reality Service Award、2012年IFIP TC14 Contribution Award。
2001年IEEEフェロー、電子情報通信学会フェロー、2006年IFIP Technical Committee on Entertainment Computing Chair、2012年バーチャルリアリティ学会フェロー、2014年IEEE終身フェロー、2014年人工知能学会名誉会員。
